Empowering Patients, Protecting Privacy: Revolutionizing Healthcare Data Sharing
Today's health data systems often force patients to choose between care and privacy. Sharing the wrong information, or too much information, erodes patient trust and in some cases can cause patient harm. As a patient, you should be able to share the information you want safely, equitably, and on your own terms.
Today's health data systems often force patients to choose between care and privacy. Studies have shown time and again that giving patients control over their health data protects their dignity and strengthens trust in health care.
Today’s health data landscape is fragmented and fraught with risk. Privacy laws vary significantly across federal, state, and institutional lines, leaving health systems unsure how to share data without violating rules or exposing patients to harm. We are building tools, guidance, and technical resources that allow health systems, health IT product developers, and states to move beyond talk and into action.
Shift brings together technologists, clinicians, ethicists, patient advocates, and policymakers - without membership fees or political bias. Our goal is to establish a privacy-safe interoperability infrastructure for all. Demonstrations of Shift principles in practice will be built into The Shift Sandbox.
We know that progress requires more than good ideas. It demands coordination, trust, and shared purpose. That’s why Shift brings together like-minded collaborators, aligns complementary initiatives, and reduces duplication so every effort moves us forward collectively. By fostering practical solutions and amplifying collective impact, Shift helps ensure that patients’ rights, privacy, and safety aren’t sidelined.
Shift is transforming health data sharing through patient-centered standards, technical innovation, and policy alignment
